History of the Domestic Dog

DNA analysis has proved that dogs are decedents from the grey wolf (Canis lupus). DNA research published in 1997 found no evidence that dogs have ancestors with any other species than the grey wolf. Fossils of humans and wolves have been discovered dating back 400,000 years. It has been suggested by Stephen Budiansky in his book ‘the truth about dogs’ that the genetic move from wolf to a new species happened 100,000 years ago and called ‘proto-dogs’. He also claims it was the dog who chose us; they hung around campfires begging food. This theory can be substantiated if we think how strong and powerful the wolf and dog are, is it then not more unlikely that humans could forcibly domesticate them? The proto-dogs appearance remained unchanged for many years, and domesticated dogs go back around 20,000 years. Brian Hare, director of the Duke University Canine Cognition Centre, suggest that the physical changes occurred due to a process of self-domestication.

Mobirise

This is when the friendliest animal of the species gains an advantage, such as friendly to humans gains them scraps of food. Friendliness somehow drives physical changes; the evidence he uses for this is the experiment of domesticated foxes in Russia. Foxes were bred to be comfortable to get close to humans, as they became friendly; their appearance is said to have been more adorable and dog-like.
External factors that have led to different breeds emerging are climate, geography, predators, and parasites. During this evolution, change not only happened in appearance but also behaviour. Behaviours changed due to environment and differ between breeds depending on the dog’s purpose to the human, a companion or working dog. One behavioural change in the domestic dog is the excessive need to scent mark, this is due to living alone away from other dogs, surrounding themselves with their own scent provides security. Dogs have also developed the bark as a form of communication
